Our Surgeons - why choose the Lions Eye Institute Laser Vision Centre for your refractive surgery?


All of our surgeons have trained in corneal and refractive surgery at recognised international Centres in the USA and UK and have long term commitments to both clinical practice and research.

Trained in ophthalmology in Western Australia, then underwent specialty fellowship training in Corneal and Refractive Surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London and University of London and then at Emory University Atlanta, Georgia, USA for 2 years.

He is Director of the Laser Vision Centre and Day Surgery Centre at the Lions Eye Institute. He is a Consultant Corneal Surgeon at Royal Perth Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Western Australia. He has over 23 years experience in Refractive Surgery and was the first surgeon to perform LASIK in Western Australia.

Trained in ophthalmology in Western Australia, then underwent specialty fellowship training in the USA for two years including a fellowship in Corneal and Refractive Surgery at the University of Texas Health and Science Centre in Dallas.

He is a consultant Corneal Surgeon at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital and Associate Professor at the University of Western Australia. He is the current and founding president of the Australasian Cataract and Refractive Surgery Society as well as the current president of the Asia Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He has over 17 years experience in Refractive Surgery and was the first person to perform Excimer Laser surgery for refractive errors in Australia.

Dr Steven Wiffen  MBBS Hons, FRANZCO, FRACS

Trained in ophthalmology in Western Australia then undertook 2 year fellowships in Corneal and Refractive Surgery at the Corneo-Plastic Unit, East Grinstead, England and also at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA. He was Director of the Corneo- Plastic Unit and Eye Bank, East Grinstead 1993-1994.

He is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Fremantle Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital. He is Director of the Lions Eye Bank of Western Australia and Senior Lecturer, Centre for Ophthalmology and Visual Science, University of Western Australia.
